In today’s SketchUp quick tip, we’re going to talk about using styles to quickly make sure that the front side of your faces are facing the camera!

When you’re working with architectural models, especially models that you’re going to run through a photorealistic rendering program, it’s important to have the front face of an object facing the camera. Otherwise, rendering programs can give you texture distortions and other problems.
However, especially when working with models like this one, which I downloaded from the 3D warehouse, it can be difficult to figure out which faces are oriented correctly.
What we’re going to do is use our style settings to quickly find and reverse faces with the wrong face facing outward.
To start, go to the styles section of your tray on the right hand side of the page.
You’re going to want to go to the edit tab, where you’ll see a series of little boxes. You’re going to want to click on the one that looks like a gray box with some blue on it.
Once you click on this, take a look at your model. You basically just told SketchUp that with the style you have active, you don’t want it to render materials, just the default colors for the front and back sides. Now you can easily see most of the faces that have the back side facing outward, and you can go select them, right click, and reverse them.
While this makes the back material faces fairly easy to see, there’s another trick you can use to make these faces even more visible. If you look above your style boxes, you can see the box to set your back color. Click on that and adjust it with the color wheel to be a bright color, like red.
Now it’s even easier to see what faces have the back faces facing out.
Once you’re done reversing faces, you may have to go in and re-apply some textures. This is usually fairly easy to do using the eye dropper and paint bucket tools.

A lot of the time, when you’re working with a SketchUp model, you’re going to want to add some kind of background image. Usually when you do this, you’re trying to create some kind of geographical context, like adding an image of mountains, plains, sky, etc.
This video will teach you several different ways of adding a background image to your model.
The first is probably the simplest – just draw a face in the background and apply your background image to it. For example, if I have this house (house credit) on a ground plane, I can just draw a flat face in the background, add my texture, maybe do some resizing, and we’re good! I’d recommend putting this face on a layer so you can turn it on and off.
The plus side to this method is that it’s very easy. However, the downside is often that it’s limited to a few camera angles.
The next thing you can do is add a watermark to your image. Instead of adding actual geometry to your image, you can create a watermark in the styles section of your model using your background image. The positive to this is that it will always stay behind your model, even if you move your camera around. However, I’ve found especially for exterior models, it can be a bit difficult to get your scene set up so that everything looks natural. Plus, adjusting your image can be a little tricky as well.
The third way you can do this is to create a curving background behind your model. This has several benefits – the first is that it allows you to adjust your camera angle because it covers so much area. The second is that if you render your model, you should get some reflection of the sky in your glass, making it look more realistic. The downside to this on is that you have to use a projected texture, so it can be a bit tricky to get your image to line up the way you want it to.
The fourth way that I’m going to talk about is downloading a sky dome. A sky dome is basically a dome drawn in SketchUp with a sky material applied to it. The nice thing about a sky dome is it completely covers your model, meaning that there is no gap at the top – it’s like having a complete sky actually over your model. The downside to a sky dome is that it requires some UV mapping/advanced texturing to create (which we’re not going to get too deeply into right now). However, there are some sky domes you can download from the 3D warehouse to get your started.

In this video, learn to model a basic house in SketchUp with the push pull and offset tools!

To start, we’re going to draw the footprint of our house. If it’s a rectangle, you can just activate the rectangle tool by tapping the “R” key, then typing in the measurements of your house and hitting the enter key.
Now that we have the footprint of our house drawn, we’re going to use the push-pull tool to extrude our house into 3D. To do this, activate the push pull tool by tapping the “P” key, click once on the face of your house, then type in the height you’d like to see and hit the enter key. This will extrude your house at the height you entered.
Now that we have our house shape, we’re going to add slope to our roof. Probably the simplest way is to find the midpoint of your house, then use the line tool to draw a line up 3’. Once you’ve drawn your line up, you can draw lines to the two corners to create a face, then erase your center line so that the face you created is one uniform face. Then, use the push-pull tool to extrude this face to the back side of your house.
Remember that you can use inferencing as you do this to quickly draw this new shape to the back side of your house. You can click anywhere on the back side to do this.
Now what we’re going to do is use the offset tool to draw our eave. Remember, the offset tool will draw a series of lines based on the lines around the perimeter of a face. Activate the offset tool, click on your face, then type in a distance, like 6”, and hit the enter key. Now clean up the new face that was created, then push pull it so that you have a 12” overhang on one side, then extrude it back the other way so you have a 12” overhang on the other side.
Now, let’s add a door and a window. To do this, we’re going to use the rectangle tool to draw our door, then use the offset tool to create some trim. You can start by using the rectangle tool to draw your door – in this case, draw a rectangle that’s 3’ wide x 8’ high. Now, use the offset tool to draw 3” of trim. You can push-pull this trim 3” or so to give your trim some detailing.
Let’s do the same thing with our window – draw a window on the wall to the dimensions you’d like, then use the offset and push-pull tools to create your trim.
The other thing we can do now is create a chimney. To do this, I’m going to start by drawing one lrine right off our roof along the green axis. Once you’ve done this, you can use the rectangle tool to draw a rectangle the size of our chimney. From here, you can either extrude this rectangle down using the push-pull tool, or you can just manually draw in lines along the blue axis that intersect with your roof to fill in the faces. This is probably a cleaner solution.
Finally, if you want to, you can come in and add materials to your house using the materials section in your tray. This is quite easy – just click on the material you’d like, then click on the face you’d like to color in order to apply the material.
One thing I’m going to do really quick is add a wainscot to our model. To do this, all I’m going to do is use the move tool in copy mode to copy the lines around the base of our model up about 3’0”. Simple double click on the face on the bottom to select the perimeter, deselect the face by “Shift Clicking,” and use the move tool in copy mode to move the perimeter lines up about 3’0”. You can push pull it slightly to give it a little depth, then apply a brick material. You could even model a small cap in here if you wanted to.

There are a couple different extensions you can use to create tensile structure designs – I’d recommend having them both on your computer. The first is Curviloft by Fredo6, and the second is Soap Skin and Bubble. They work a little differently, and sometimes you can get different results by trying each one of them.
What I’ve found when working with these structures is that it’s best to start by drawing the area on the ground that you’re trying to cover. Then you can develop a framework and use these extensions to develop a skin over the framework.
The best way to do this is to think about your structure as if you’re actually building it – you can draw lines as if they’re supports, then draw arcs between them to develop your frameworks.
Sometimes it’s best to generate the entire framework all at once, and sometimes it’s better to generate one part of the framework, then use the rotate tool to generate the rest of it.
Don’t be afraid to draw a flat surface to draw your arcs on.

Today marks the 200th video I’ve put out on this channel – I just wanted to make this quick video to thank all of you for subscribing and continuing to watch the videos I make.
My goal has always been to make TheSketchUp Essentials the number one SketchUp channel on YouTube, and the only way I’ve been this successful has been with your help.
I love making SketchUp videos, and being able to put them out and have conversations with you guys about the videos just makes this more fun.
Moving forward, I’m going to keep the channel structured just about the same way.
I generally try to make videos at least 5 days a week, with Monday and Friday being modeling shape tutorials, Tuesdays being Essentials Tutorials, Wednesdays being quick tips, and Thursdays being Extension reviews.
Probably one thing I’m going to start doing is for some of my essentials videos, I’m going to focus on a particular discipline each month. For example, this month’s Tuesday videos will probably focus more on tips for beginners just getting started, then next month I’m going to focus a bit more on tips for architects.
There will still be videos for organic modeling, fun shapes, and quick tips as well, but some of my videos will follow a bit more of a theme.
There were a couple topics you guys asked for that I’m hoping to focus on in the future as well (as I can get the funding put away). Some of the things you guys asked for included videos on using Layout, more organic modeling videos, more tips for architecture, and some more rendering videos.
Obviously, some of the licenses and other things required to make some of these videos take money, and it’s just taking me a little while to get to the point where I can purchase some of those things, so thank you for being patient.

In this video, I’m going to talk a little bit about modeling from a reference image or a reference plan. This can be especially useful when you’re trying to recreate plans and layouts from old drawings, sketches, or other images. This is an excellent workflow for generating a 3D model from a 2D plan.
This is a great way for an architect to bring conceptual versions of buildings into their models as well.
In this case, I’m going bring in an old plan that I found on the internet by importing it as an image, by going up to the file, import menu option.
Place the image by clicking once to set a base point, then a second time to finalize placement.
Once you’ve set your image, you’re going to want to set the proper scale. You can do this by using the tape measure tool. Use the tool to measure the distance between two set points, then type in a new distance and hit the enter key to re-size your model.
Once you’ve got your model scaled, you can do a couple different things.
First of all, if you want to, you can just model on top of your image. Anything you draw will now be to scale, since you resized your image to be to scale.
You can use this to just set a floor plan and extrude it to 3D if you want, or you can break the image up into a couple different groups. Once you do this, you can use the images to model the exterior of the building.
One of the other benefits to doing this this way is that you can actually use the images as textures in your model. This can be beneficial for helping you place things like windows and textures on your image, or you can also use it as your final, complete model.

1. Soap skin and bubble –
a. This extension allows you to create a skin across various edges. This is great for creating organic type shapes. It allows you to create a skin, as well as adjust the “pressure” in the skin allowing for greatly customizable shapes.
2. Round Corner –
a. This extension allows you to round the edges of 3D shapes. There are several different options for this, including rounding your edges and beveling your edges.
3. FredoScale –
a. This extension allows you to geometrically transform your objects in a number of ways, including scaling, twisting, bending, and rotating. I’ve probably used the radial bend tool from FredoScale in more tutorials than just about any other extensions’ tool.
4. Joint Push Pull –
a. SketchUp doesn’t come built in with the ability to push pull curved surfaces. This extension changes that, allowing you to not only push pull curved surfaces, but also to push pull multiple faces at once!
5. Curviloft –
a. This extension is designed to create skins using contours. It will create faces between multiple geometric shapes, as well as the skinning option allows the creation of skins across multiple lines.
6. Shape Bender –
a. This extension bends shapes along curves, allowing you to create interesting variations of shapes
7. Helix Along Curve –
a. SketchUp comes built in with several arc tools, but none of them are very good at drawing curves that arc along both vertical and horizontal directions at once. This tool allows both the creation of arc lines, but also tubes along a helix.
8. Selection Toys –
a. Trying to select and de-select complex geometry can be frustrating. However, with this extension, you can have much greater control over your selections, allowing you to do things like select only faces, or select only lines, or many other selection options.
9. Flowify –
a. This extension allows you to deform objects along a given shape. This extension has a slightly high learning curve, and an unforgiving workflow, but when it works, it allows for the creation of fantastic new shapes.
10. Pipe Along Path/Lines to Tubes
a. These 2 extensions are designed for creating tubes and paths around lines. Pipe along path is great for creating pipes with linear paths, while lines to tubes will create tubes around every selected line segment, but it won’t be as continuous. Using these interchangeably will allow you great control over the tubes you create.

We’ve talked several times in the past about how styles work in SketchUp. Basically, styles are settings that you can adjust to change the way your model looks. Today, we’re going to talk about how to save a style to a custom location so that you can load it in future models.
This is a model I downloaded from the 3D warehouse – it’s called “Kitchen” by Shinnah.
As you can see, it’s a fairly detailed, decent looking model. What we’re going to do is adjust some of our style settings to get a different look, then save that style.
To start off, we’re going to create a new style by clicking on the “create new style” button in the styles section of our tray. We’ll go ahead and call this style Justin’s Sketch Style.
Now we’ll go in and adjust some of our settings.
I’m going for more of a hand drawn type look, so I’m going to turn the materials off, and adjust the line weight settings, adding some jitter and a bit of extension so that we get that kind of sketchy look. We may even add a bit of fog to liven it up a little bit.
Once I’ve gotten the style the way I want it, I’m going to update the style by clicking on the thumbnail in the upper right corner. This will save my changes to this particular style.
Then, I’m going to find the thumbnail for my style in the “in model” area of the styles section.
Right click on your thumbnail and select “Save as.”
Navigate to the location where you’d like to save your style. I’d recommend creating a folder for all of your different styles.
Once you’ve picked your location, click save to save your style in that location.
Now, whenever you open a new model, you can select that folder, and all the styles in that folder will show up in your thumbnails for quick and easy use!

In this video, I’d like to talk a bit more about organizing your model so that it can be imported into Layout to create various different plans.
I’m going to build on some of the concepts from that video, so you may want to start with that one.
One of the keys to creating models that you’re going to import into Layout is planning ahead and grouping your model accordingly.
The idea here is that you set your visibilities up so when you make changes in your model, your images in Layout adjust automatically, so you don’t have to go in and re-create all your different views.
Everyone seems to develop their own system for doing this – Matt Donley has a system that he uses in the book SketchUp to Layout, and Michael Brightman also has a system that he details in “The SketchUp Workflow for Architects.” I’ve linked to both in the notes below.
Generally speaking though, they all share the same basic concepts – you organize your model with groups and components, then you control visibilities using layers.
You create your geometry in groups, then put those groups onto different layers so that you can adjust them as necessary.
Generally speaking, you break your layers up into 3 types – Objects, Conceptual Items (Like Door Swings), and Levels (useful for multiple level buildings).
I’ve going to use door swings as an example. At the moment, SketchUp doesn’t really have a great way to create door swing indicators in your models, so often you’re going to end up drawing those in manually, but you’re also going to want to be able to hide those – you don’t want door swings showing up if you use your model for a 3D rendering, for example.
In this case, what we do, is first of all, we have all our different doors in a group. That way we can turn them all on or off. Within that group, each individual door will be its own group that contains two objects – the door geometry and the door swings. We’ll put the group with the door swings on its own layer for each door. That way, if we want to, we can toggle the swings on and off as we desire.
You can do this same thing basically for any kind of geometry you’d like. I’d specifically suggest creating layers for any detailing you create that might make it difficult to pull dimension lines, etc. For example, if you modeled a wood base or a wood trim piece, you’d probably want to put that on a “ARCH – Wood Trim” layer so you can turn it off whenever you’d like.
The other thing I want to talk about in this video really quick is organizing your scenes. As discussed in the first video, the way we create our plan images in Layout is by creating scenes that show the visibilities you’d like to see. However, for bigger projects, this can get REALLY cumbersome really quickly if you don’t organize your scenes properly.
So what we’re going to do is use the Scenes manager to organize all our different scenes. First thing I’d recommend is selecting the “Details” or the “List” visibility. That way you can see all your scenes in a row. Now this next piece is going to be you finding whatever works for you – in my case, what I would do with my scenes is give all my scenes a prefix and putting them in order. So, for example, for this image, it’s a Level 1 floor plan, so I’d name it FP_L1. If I had a level 2, I’d name that view FP_L2.
For my elevations, I could create 4 views for the different elevations of my building – Elev_N, Elev_S, Elev_E, and Elev_W.
I’d also create a scene specifically for modeling and make sure it’s first in this list. That way it’s easy to toggle back to your scene that you’re working from.
